Mnet "20's Choice" -- needless to explain with words

All artists attending the 4th annual cable music channel Mnet's "20's Choice" ceremony held at the River Park pool of the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill hotel in Seoul, South Korea on August 26, 2010, sing and dance to trio DJ DOC's song "Run to You."

On the stage that miss A sang "Bad Girl Good Girl" and 4minute "Hot Issue," veteran actor Kim Kap-soo yelled to the audience to call him 'hyung' [a Korean term men use to men who are slightly older than them] and 'oppa' [a Korean term women use to men who are slightly older than them]. And when he stepped down from the stage, world's greatest musicians UV shockingly announced their retirement. This all took place at one site. This was the Mnet's "20's Choice."

"We are not a singing awards ceremony," an Mnet official emphasized to journalists at the press zone but it is true that the event for its fourth year being 'a cultural awards ceremony which represents the sentimentality of people in their 20s,' is still an unfamiliar concept to those of us who are used to categorizing culture and then ranking it. But it is just one of those things which are difficult to understand when trying to conceptualize and explain yet completely understandable seen and felt. It is the same with "20's Choice."

Emcees Heo Dong-hwan and Lee Hwa-jung had barely finished saying "We thank all the people who are here at the 2010 '20's Choice'," when hip-hop duo Supreme Team appeared and pushed them into the pool which was actually the opening act, and designer Ha Sang-beg held a fashion show performance with members of girl groups Secret, miss A and Nine Muses as the models. And there was no awkwardness even when professor and computer security expert Ahn Chul-soo gives his award acceptance speech through the VCR in his composed and calm manner because the audience in their twenties, who might have gone wild over boy band 2AM's performance, also do not hold back in applauding this creative and ethical businessman.

Hence the only disappointment felt after the show's closing remarks by emcees Seo In-young and Jo Kwon was that this 30-year-old reporter could no longer engage in the show. That is when DJ DOC, whose average age of its members are 37.7 years, adorned the grand finale of the show with their hit song "Run to You" with the rest of the 'babies.' With this song which was released ten years ago, 4minute Hyun-ah who is in her teens, 40-year-old Lee Ha-neul and the 30-year-old reporter all became one, jumping up and down while shouting "Bounce me." This, is "20's Choice."

Jay Park, Jang Hyuk set to leave "Secret Garden"

Jay Park (left) and Jang Hyuk

Actors who were cast for upcoming SBS TV series "Secret Garden," including Jang Hyuk and former boy band 2PM leader Jay Park, are said to have withdrawn from the show.

According to multiple sources, actor Jang Hyuk who was set to play the male lead and actress Kim Sa-rang decided to pull out from the drama after Park's casting for the show fell through. All three are managed by major talenthouse SidusHQ.

Although officials had not confirmed Park was cast for "Secret Garden," his agency SidusHQ had said earlier this month that negotiations are "going positively" and they are waiting for a response from the show.

Park was set to play the role of a gifted singer in the fantasy melodrama by producer Shin Woo-cheol and scenarist Kim Eun-sook, the duo famous for creating smash hits "Lovers in Paris" and "On Air."

Officials working with Jang Hyuk have said the actor's withdrawal from the show "has not been set as of yet" but several industry sources have accepted his exit from the show as fact.

Park, whose Korean name is Park Jae-beom, joined SidusHQ this summer when he returned to Korea for the first time in months after splitting from 2PM. He has taken on a solo career in singing and acting since, releasing his debut album and filming Korea-U.S. b-boy pic "Hype Nation."

Jang Hyuk of smash hit TV series "The Slave Hunters" is set to star in the Chinese remake of hit Korean drama "All About Eve," to premiere in China in September.

New Trend In K-Pop: Pretty-Beasts?

They're not just pretty boys, yet they're not your typical "beastly", manly men either. So what are they??

There's been a new wave of poster boys in the k-pop industry that have created a new fusion of a category: pretty-beasts (???). Gone are the guys that simply had pretty, delicately-featured faces. Gone are the men that simply boasted their buff arms and abs so defined that they resembled chocolate bars (hence the nickname Koreans use, "chocolate abs"). Demands are rising as now the trend is to have both.

Example number one : BEAST's Lee Ki-kwang

He has that clear milky complexion and moon-shaped eyes when he smiles that's enough to make any young (or old!) woman go weak at the knees. Don't let that baby-face fool you though because as soon as the shirt comes off, it's clear that a big portion of his days are spent at the gym. He's been fast rising not only on the music scene with his group BEAST, but on the small screen as well. He's gained popularity as Kang Sae-ho on "Highkick Through The Roof" and more recently on the new variety programs "Hot Brothers".

Example number two : 2PM's Nickhun

Also frequenting many of the popular variety programs (i.e. "Star King", "We Got Married Season 2"), Nickhun is just as used to hear compliments regarding his baby-face. Having been compared to Baby Mason and actress Moon Geun-young, he has those innocent features and a charming smile that undoubtedly places him in the "pretty-boy" or "flower-boy" category. However, he's also a member of the group 2PM whose whole concept revolves around them being "beastly" men. When watching him on stage moving to the powerful choreography of 2PM songs, many women find it hard to distinguish whether they feel maternal drawings or pure attraction.

Example number three : Lee Seung-gi

When you think of the clean-cut boy-next-door, immediately Lee Seung-gi pops into your head. He's been known as a "triple threat" as a singer, actor, and emcee. He's earned a reputation of being one of those annoying people that are good at everything they do, but yet, you can't hate them for it. He's starred on the popular variety show "1 Night 2 Days", emceed "Strong Heart", and is starring in a new drama "My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho" with one of the hottest Korean women, Shin Mina. He's left many of his fans in shock though when snippets of him showering were aired on "1 Night 2 Days", showing off his hard abs.

Example number four : SS501's Kim Hyun-joong

For months now, the prime example of a pretty-boy in k-pop was Kim Hyun-joong. His big eyes, delicate lips, and high cheek-bones are enough to make any woman envious. He even starred in the most quintessential flower-boy drama: "Boys Over Flowers"! However, watch any of his live performances when he's in SS501 mode, it's clear that he's just as manly as his features may be feminine. In fact, he's taking on a new drama role in "Playful Kiss". He'll play a more masculine character featuring a well-cut body, which is quite appropriate because that's what's portrayed in the comic series that inspired this project.?

Example number five : Wonbin

He's one of the most recognizable faces in Korean dramas and movies. And for good reason. Big eyes, big lips, everything about him is well defined. However, his past few dramas toned his strong, masculine side down some by placing him in younger, weaker, and more vulnerable roles. However, he's changed that all around with his new hit of a film "Mister" where he shows off a lean, muscular frame that is anything but weak and vulnerable. "Mister" is his first action film with his character being a more rebellious bad-boy type. Overall, he's showing more beast than pretty-boy this time around, placing him also in the "pretty-beast" category.
